The Google Pixel 11 is the most AI-driven smartphone Google has ever made, yet the company is in no hurry to label its best innovations as AI features. At the Made by Google event in New York, hosted by comedian Trevor Noah, the Pixel 11 family took center stage with a smarter camera, proactive assistance and a voice keyboard that makes regular typing feel slow. Behind the scenes, Google made a deliberate choice. It wants to sell you the benefits, not the buzzword.
Why Google downplays AI on the Pixel 11
AI has become a divisive term. Some people love it, others are tired of hearing it, and Google has clearly noticed. “I think the word AI is actually a little scary, and I think it kind of turns some folks off,” Sameer Samat, Google’s president of the Android ecosystem, told The Deep View. “So one of the things that we’re really trying to do is just talk about the benefits of the features, even if we never mention the word AI.”
That does not mean Google is being modest about its ambitions. At the same launch event, Rick Osterloh, Google’s SVP of devices, framed the shift in much bigger terms: “It’s no longer an operating system that helps you use your phone. It’s an intelligence system that gets things done for you.” The umbrella for all of this is Gemini Intelligence, the computer-use technology Google introduced ahead of I/O 2026. The Pixel 11 simply presents each capability on its own merits instead of shouting about the technology underneath.

Rambler makes voice typing genuinely fast
If you have ever used Wispr Flow on a computer, you know how much faster voice input can be than a keyboard, and how much more accurate it is than classic dictation through Siri or Google Assistant. On phones, tools like that have always felt clunky. Rambler solves this by building the same idea directly into Gboard, Google’s keyboard. It is as quick to reach as the old dictation button, but it produces clean text without the ums, uhs and false starts. You talk naturally, and the Pixel 11 turns it into writing you can actually send.
Magic Capture never misses the moment
The sleeper feature of the Pixel 11 is Magic Capture, a third capture mode that sits next to photo and video. Switch to it, record a scene, and the phone does the rest. Behind the scenes, Google’s models analyze around 400 frames to deliver the perfect 12-megapixel still, and you get a video without changing modes. These are real high-resolution images, not screen grabs or low-quality frames.
Magic Capture shines with moving subjects. Think of a smiling baby, a dog mid-jump or a buzzer-beating shot at a basketball game. The mode freezes motion and picks the most dramatic pose, and it can apply edits automatically if you want it to. Camera hardware still matters, with a new 48-megapixel main sensor on the Pixel 11 and upgraded sensors with 120x Pro Zoom on the Pro models, but this software trick is what people will remember.
Multi-step tasks introduce agentic AI
The most forward-looking feature is also the one Google rolls out most carefully. You can type or talk to your Pixel 11, describe a goal or a series of actions, and an AI agent carries them out in a safe, sandboxed environment. You can monitor what it does, and the phone asks for your approval before final steps such as buying something, sending a message or scheduling time on your calendar. Google is deliberately slow-walking this capability so the broader public can get comfortable with AI agents, and that caution feels right.
Proactive help that shows up before you ask
Beyond the headline features, the Pixel 11 family generates glanceable cards inside the apps you are already using. If a friend messages you about an upcoming trip, a card can appear with your flight details and whether the plane is on time. If you are texting about dinner, your Pixel can offer to secure a reservation. Google says you will see similar suggestions to save events to your Calendar, locations to Maps or membership numbers to Google Wallet.
A preview feature goes one step further with proactive suggestions based on your location. Waiting for a table at a new restaurant can trigger a lock screen notification with menu insights and tips on where to sit for the best view. Google notes that some of these capabilities may require a subscription for higher usage.
Two additions deserve special mention. DeepMind’s SL2T model, which converts sign language to text, debuts on the Pixel 11 line. Deaf and hard-of-hearing users can sign at their phone to search the web, write messages and converse with Gemini. Meanwhile, the Pro models get HiLight, a ring of colored LEDs around the camera flash. It glows in different patterns while Gemini listens, thinks or responds, and you can assign custom colors to your most important callers. The idea is to keep you informed without pulling you back to the screen.
Smaller upgrades round out the package. Circle to Search finally works inside the camera, Gemini translates videos on the fly including the audio, and a new teleprompter mode overlays your script on the viewfinder while recording, advancing the text as you speak.
Tensor G6 is built for AI first
All of this runs on the new Tensor G6 chip, which Google positions as an AI engine rather than a benchmark champion. The chip packs 50% more TPU compute power and runs the latest Gemini Nano model, processing AI tasks on the device up to 3.5 times faster while using up to 3.5 times less energy. Everyday performance improves too, with 25% faster browsing and 15% faster app launches. A new Titan M3 security chip adds post-quantum cryptography for a secure boot, and a fresh Counterpoint Research report concludes that the Pixel AI experience offers the best privacy protection on a phone.
Early Geekbench 7 results spotted by Notebookcheck tell an interesting story. The Tensor G6 appears with an unusual seven-core CPU, delivering roughly 7% better single-core results than the Tensor G5 reference but around 12% lower multi-core scores. Treat pre-release benchmarks with caution, but the pattern fits Google’s strategy. Raw multi-core muscle matters less to the Pixel 11 than fast, efficient on-device AI.
From apps to actions
Step back and the agentic features are the real story of this launch. Today’s phones still revolve around apps. You open one, tap through menus and switch to the next. Once the agentic paradigm takes hold, phones will revolve around tasks, goals and actions instead. You state what you want, and the device figures out which steps and which apps get you there. The Pixel 11 is the first clear move in that direction, and it will change how you use your phone more than any camera upgrade ever could.
Worth knowing before you buy
The Pixel 11 starts at $899, the Pixel 11 Pro at $1,099 and the Pixel 11 Pro XL at $1,299, all with 256GB of storage now that the 128GB tier is gone. The phones are on pre-order now and reach stores on August 20, with seven years of OS, security and Pixel Drop updates included. Pro buyers also get six months of Google AI Pro, with higher Gemini usage limits and 5TB of cloud storage.
That last detail reveals the fine print of Google’s AI-first phone. Many Gemini Intelligence features launch only in the US, Japan and English-language markets, and the bundled subscription quietly normalizes paying monthly for the smartest capabilities. Google may avoid saying the word AI on the box, but the Pixel 11 makes one thing clear. The intelligence is the product, and increasingly, it is also the business model.
