Internet of Things product and solutions provider Libelium keeps expanding the number of Libelium Smart World projects it has across the globe, with two smart city projects in the US, leveraging LoRa and Sigfox.

The company works on a Smart Water project in San Francisco, in collaboration with Sigfox and San Francisco County.

In Colorado, Libelium is working on new projects to monitor weather and environment conditions. Here it isn’t working with Sigfox but with competing low power wide area network technology (LPWAN), LoRaWAN.

Responding to demand and growth regarding LPWAN in the US

Libelium is also adding both LoRaWAN and Sigfox wireless connectivity for North America, with its Waspmote OEM and Waspmote Plug and Sense! sensor devices now supporting both wireless connectivity approaches.

Both Semtech (the founder of the LoRa Alliance) and Sigfox are increasingly present in North America with, among others a US partnership between Semtech and Comcast do deploy LoRaWAN networks in 30 cities. Sigfox, on the other hand, is expanding to 100 US cities.

As demand for low power wide area (LPWA) network technologies goes up and the key non-cellular players are rapidly expanding their global and US footprint, Libelium wants to offer the widest interoperability in the vast array of IoT connectivity choices.

With the two mentioned smart cities projects, Libelium is adding two more projects to the several ‘smart world’ (see picture below) projects the company already has across the globe.

Libelium’s CEO Alicia Asín says that she believes that adding the Sigfox and LoRaWAN protocols to the company’s Waspmote open source wireless sensor platform for the US will help in building more smart world projects in North America.

The company is already offering both protocols in Europe since 2015 for a variety of successful applications in, among others, smart parking, smart environment, smart water quality, smart farming and smart pollution projects.

Customers who want a Waspmote Plug & Sense! can choose between the 900MHz or 868MHz bands, depending on geography.

The Smart Parking model by default has both radios (LoRaWAN / Sigfox) included. This enables customers to compare the performance of LoRaWAN and Sigfox within smart parking projects thanks to the built-in dual radio.

With the recent update and the new projects Spain-based Libelium is becoming active in the US. The Libelium IoT Sensor Platform is ready to use the 900-930 MHz band for the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Singapore, etc. The platform currently also includes FCC and IC certifications for the US and Canada.
